Read whole chapter and will be real brief:
Due to the complex world of internet encryption (private key, public key, digital signatures, key certification [key management and counterfeit keys], digital certificates, digital fingerprints) transmitting personal information over the internet (such as credit card #) is pretty darn secure and pretty darn interesting stuff behind the scenes. The computers and the coding works seamlessly so you don’t have to do a thing, however, you can participate (provided you have the know-how, etc.)
Most likely failure to security is human error. Dah

"I used AIM because it was loaded onto my son's old computer, and I knew he had an account. Whith some difficulty, I was able to comunicate with him(actually he invited me into a chat). Once in, I found the service easy to use and it seemed to have some nice features, like attaching a file or a link. I had difficulty with the speed of the typing required, and the abreviations. Please type in English!" I used aol instant messenger before, I find it very valuable easy and fast too.Even though I have never been in the chat room before, I used it for other programs.

read chapter 6 from page 401 to 454. hope to finish reading the chapter today (pages 455 to 468). on Sunday, I spent about 3 hours on the internet. I decided to uninstall programs based on last class (my computer was slow and you said it looked like to many programs open). went to start, control panel, add/remove programs; did search criteria of last date used and then as frequency of use. removed alot of programs, even some i did not know what they were. alot said i had to restart computer and sometimes i did, sometimes i didn't and sometimes it did it automatically. then was going to try again to get music on my ipod; however, it said i needed to install a program which i remembered was one of the ones i just removed (name was quicktime or something like that). so i reinstalled that. then it was getting late and one thing i wanted to install was the microsoft office 2007 package so i went to karen allens site and started the process. it took a little over an hour to download the package. it was around 500 mb. don't know if it took long because of size of program and/or because my computer is still slow. anyway, i am glad i got mocrosoft office 2007. i then did some excel homework for my class on monday night with L. Bello in room just above us. would like to get back to trying to get my ipod to work. perhaps one of the classes coming up just before class starts and/or just after class, could i show you what i am doing to see what i may or may not be doing properly. my learning curve is way out of whack, need to take a second look at everything rather than looking at second life. :) can't even manage my 1st life, never mind taking on a 2nd life. :) will definitely consider this class again and/or even if i just sit in on it. and lastly, having said all above, would still like a course on "above and beyond" section of book.

are we human or spiritual or virtual beings?

have a site that I think qualifies as a web community site that I have been using for years. i believe www.naic-club.com is such a site. would be glad to show what it is and how i use it.
lastly, i am concerned about web 2.0 because I am getting the feeling that this is the future for communicating and it does not appear to me to have value. I'm thinking that communicating has to have a purpose, a goal; I see web 2.0 as mostly entertainment purposes. entertainment is ok but should not 24/7. also, i beleive in communicating or communities that meet in person. after church, we gahter for coffee and communicate; JWU has networking breakfast meetings with guest speakers, JWU has "Wildcat Wednesdays" where the Alumni meet at Joe's bar and grille in Providence Place Mall and we network; JWU has a supper meeting at their cooking museum in Harborside Campus off Allens Ave, and we again, have a guest speaker and supper and communicate and commune with supper., I belong to 2 volunteer ogranizations that we have a trifold purpose; to socialize with like-minded persons, help those in need, and learn more about 1. boating and 2. investing. I find this "in person" communicating better than onlin virtual beings. We go boating rather than sit in front of a computer and the other organization, we meet an learn more about investing. We meet at local levels, regional levels, and national levels. We are human beings not virutal beings, and further we are acutally spiritual beings living as a human being temporaritly. I beleive we are here to serve others "in person" and the comptuer is a tool, like most else in this earthly world, for us to use to make earth, ourselves, and those less fortunate all better. yes, some zoning out is good, but anything over done or under done is out of balance. it is only natural to be balanced and in touch physically, not virtually, with others.

I agree with Bill , that it's a bit overwhelming for the older generation to become well versed on computers. We need to be willing to go out of our comfort zone and get going!

I went to Sixapart.com and found it visually presented at a friendly level. I took the VOX tour and found that nonstressful. It is a simple process to sign on, however, I decided not to sign on but to read the terms of use. The terms were straightforward.
I then choose to compare facebook to sixapart. I found their site not laid out well for me. Although it appeared to have less on their home page compared to sixapart, I found some basic info not to pop-out as well. I took the tour which was basic but again not as easy navigating as sixapart. Their sign on is very similar, however I read their terms of use to compare and found it just as unpleasant as the rest of the site compared to sixapart.
did not find out how much room either site has. Presently, I am just not interested in using such sites.
I did use match.com for a month a good 6 years or so ago. I was amazed at what people are willing to share about themselves to perfect strangers; I can't see putting my picture out there and perhaps that's why I did not get any responses. I contacted one that I liked but he said he was canceling his account and was pursuing other avenues. I also did not like the screening was based on about 20 or so criteria and most were not deep but very surface like would you date a person with tattoos....oh, yeah that is really important to me!! nada I once logged onto a catholic singles site and every since have gotten email that is far from "catholic". ugh :(

As part of the asignment, I signed onto windows live. You have to download an installer, then it inturn downloads other programs. The process was time-consuming. The set-up was easy, and the space did everything. IM, a personal web page, rss feeds, e-mail, ect. I guess they want you to do everthing from this site. on the bad side, it changed the default homepage to MSN homepage, so before you install this, make a copy of the URL of the homepage you want. I found it to be user friendly, however, not have many cyber-friends, mostly my own choosing, I do not have many people to invite. My poor son must be getting irritated with me. Unfortunately I must have made an error in entering an e-mail address. So now I either have to try certain combinations based on errors that I am likely to make or start from scratch. Just thing, somewhere out there someone might have gotten a confirmation that has him/her scratching thier head.
